We are ETHER (Engineering Team for High-Frequency Electronics and Radio)—a student club at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) dedicated to high-frequency technology, radio communication, and amateur radio. We're based at TUM's main campus on Arcisstraße, where the EI students and the Chair of High-Frequency Engineering are located.
ETHER was founded in late October 2025 by Kimo, because there was no ham radio nor high-frequency student club at TUM. He quickly teamed up with Leon, and together they worked on establishing a ham radio society at TUM. Many years ago, ham radio was very much a thing at TUM — there was an active station and society — but it had died out over time.
The old TUM station used the callsign DL0TUM, which today belongs to Prof. Robert K. Freiherr von Weizsäcker. With his permission, we can use it whenever we go on the air as a club — bringing a piece of TUM's ham radio history back on the air with every contact we make.
We're six members and, on purpose, not a registered association (no "e.V." here) — just a group of students who wanted this club to exist. Our goal is simple: build real RF hardware — antennas, amplifiers, impedance matchers, and more — and then prove it works under real-world conditions, on the air. As licensed ham radio operators, we also take that hardware into contests like POTA and IARU events, and we're always happy to motivate and support anyone preparing for their own amateur radio license.
We don't have fixed weekly meetups — instead, we get together around projects and contests. Right now, one of our biggest projects is reactivating and renovating TUM's old ham radio station. If you're interested in joining, just reach out to us, and follow us on social media to stay in the loop on what we're building and when we're next on the air.
We design and build our own circuits — antennas, amplifiers, impedance matchers, filters, and RF devices — from schematic to working hardware, then prove they hold up under real-world conditions. We feel right at home anywhere from 30 kHz up to some GHz.
We motivate and support students preparing for their own amateur radio license, so more people get the chance to harness radio waves and reach contacts around the world themselves.
As licensed operators, we take our own hardware into contests like POTA and IARU events, putting everything we've built into direct on-air operation — and usually a park, a summit, or a campus field day along with it.
The required documents were filled out and sent to TUM — from that moment on, ETHER existed.
